Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in dogs

Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) in dogs 650 366 DogHealth

Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) is one of the most common types of cancer in dogs. It usually develops in middle-aged or older (although it is increasingly common in younger dogs, 2-3 years old), large breeds of dog (Bernese Mountain, Newfoundland, Great Dane, Pyrenean Mountain, Cane Corso, Bernese Shepherd) and is most common in males.

Bone cancer is a type of tumour that usually originates on the surface of the bone and spreads from there to the inside of the bone. Unfortunately, the exact cause of its development is not yet known.

Symptoms of bone cancer (osteosarcoma)

The symptoms of bone cancer most often occur near the site of the tumour. This is typically around their limbs, ankles and knees, but it can also occur in the ribs and nasal cavity, among others. Symptoms may vary depending on the location of the tumor. There may be bone enlargement in the given place, visible swelling, if the limbs are affected, joint pain, lameness, sneezing in the case of the nasal cavity, nosebleeds, difficulty breathing.

Treatment of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) in dogs

The effectiveness of the treatment depends on a number of factors, including how deep the tumour is in the bone and whether it has reached the bone marrow.

The most effective way to treat osteosarcoma is to surgically remove the tumour.
Usually, the affected limb has to be amputated, but depending on the location and size of the tumour, sometimes minor local surgery is sufficient. However, this is quite rare.

The success of the surgical intervention primarily depends on whether the dog's immune system is able to fight against the metastasis or recurrence of the tumor. Removal of the tumor by itself rarely means a complete cure, because in 90% of cases the tumor recurs sooner or later, regardless of the success of the operation.

Surgery is often followed by chemotherapy, but unfortunately this is not very effective for bone cancer. Radiotherapy is also used, but this is mostly just to reduce pain if surgery is not possible. However it is important to understand that surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy alone will not cure cancer.

It is the body, or rather the immune system, that can defeat the tumour!

Osteosarcoma

Osteosarcoma

A strengthened immune system is much less able to be weakened by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and is much more resistant to both internal and external infections and pathogens during recovery. A healthy immune system recognises the tumour cells that are forming and responds appropriately, significantly reducing the chance of metastases and recurrence. Therefore, an immunomodulating therapy is important and recommended during the period of surgery and during the subsequent treatment.

Although osteosarcoma usually develops in a single site, this type of tumour is highly prone to metastasise and recur.

It is important that the body itself recognises, reacts appropriately and becomes resistant to tumour cells.

Our own experience and testing has shown that conventional treatment of otherwise healthy dogs (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) with some form of immunomodulatory therapy (such as K9 Immunity™ or similar products) has produced significantly better results than surgical interventions alone.

Osteosarcoma and strengthening the immune system

Strengthening the immune system is essential in cancer (Lymphoma, Osteosarcoma, Mastocytoma, Hemangiosarcoma in dogs, Dog mammary tumour, etc.) or any other disease resulting from an immune disorder! Until the body reacts to the disease on its own, there is no real cure, only symptomatic treatment.

So many vets say, rightly, that they can only prolong the life of the dog, but the tumour is still there.

Because the costs of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are so high, we are often asked if using K9 Immunity alone is enough.

It can play a significant role in prevention, however, in the case of an existing tumor, it may not be sufficient. The development of cancer was most likely allowed by the improper functioning of the immune system. The developed tumor further burdens the body. It is essential to first remove as much of the proliferating, degenerated cells as possible using conventional treatments, thereby relieving the body of the burden. This is followed by immunomodulatory therapy to "teach" the body to react again. However, we are aware of cases where the K9 Immunity™ and K9 InuFactor® used together - without traditional treatments - has led to a complete cure.

Whatever you decide to do, please discuss any decision with your vet!

A proper diet is essential

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in dogs. Many experts believe that the main reason for this is a poor diet. We usually feed our pets a diet based on cereals, even though dogs do not naturally graze on wheat fields. Dogs do not have the enzymes to digest and utilise grain. They are basically carnivores! When a carnivorous animal eats a grain-based diet, its body does not get (or cannot process and utilise) the nutrients it needs. Then, there is a high chance of immune disorders, including cancer.

If inappropriate diet is indeed one of the main causes of cancer, then it is clear that a good diet is essential for dogs with cancer. In fact, proper diet is one of the most important factors in successful cancer treatment! To really give our dogs everything they need to fight cancer, we need to provide them with the right nutrients. Just because a dog food is expensive or has a trendy name or is recommended by many people, does not mean it is the best for a dog with cancer.
